Choosing the Right Car Seat for Your Child
Keeping your child safe in vehicles requires the correct car seat. One of the most important things about car seat safety is following the directions to make sure your kid is strapped in safely. The other vital thing is following the size requirements for each car seat. To be safest, your child should be strapped in from the time they are a newborn to when they are 4'9" tall. At this time, usually between the ages of eight to ten, the adult seat belts will fit them.
The car seat should always be placed in the back seat. The first one should be rear-facing. A child should remain rear facing until they weigh at least twenty pounds and are one year old. Both convertible and infant seats can be placed rear facing in a car. Depending on which brand you get, infant-only ones can be used up to either 22 or 32 pounds. These are small in design and might be part of a stroller system. The base is usually separate and can be installed into the car. If you have more than one vehicle, you'll want multiple bases that this can snap into.
After the infant-only, your child will graduate into a convertible car seat. These are bulkier and larger than the infant ones, but they have a longer usage life. The reason that they are called convertibles is because they can convert from rear-facing to forward-facing, depending on your child's needs. They do not have separate bases, but instead need to be installed in the vehicle. There are a couple of different kinds of harnesses. There is the overhead shield, which pulls down over the baby, and the 5-point harness, which connects between the legs and at the hips and shoulders. Either can be safe, as long as the children fit comfortably.
The booster seat is for when a child is too old to fit in a car seat, but to small for an adult seat belt. School-age children use these. The easiest way to know that your child is ready for a booster is that they've met the maximum height and weight for their car seat. The booster can have a back or be a backless variety. Some models can transition from having a back to being backless. The booster makes sure that the lap and shoulder belts in the car cover the child correctly.
Once you know the right kind of car seat for your child, it's important that you buy a model that will fit your needs. There isn't one brand that is the best, and while the more expensive models have extra features and greater convenience, price doesn't determine the safety. Never use a car seat that has been involved in an accident and avoid a used one if you don't know its history. All parts as well as instructions need to be included. Also check for recalls before you buy, especially if you are getting one second-hand. Once you buy one, take the time to read the instructions and install it correctly.

Choosing The Right Car Seat
Bringing home a baby from the hospital is an amazing and frightening experience. Are you ready? The most important purchase that you make for your baby is often the last thing you buy, that being the car seat.

American Academy of Pediatrics determines that a child under 1 year old and under 20 pounds should remain in the backseat, rear-facing, and if possible positioned away from the doors (especially if the doors have airbags). There are benefits to either infant car seat, the convertible car seat transitioning with your child from rear to forward facing, and the infant-only seat being more portable for easier transport. There are two types of infant only car seats ones that have bases that the seat simply snaps into, and ones that have to be installed by the seat belt every time.
Safety Features
Most vehicles from the year 2002 and newer are equipped with little latched inside the seat, and behind the seat. This is called the LATCH system. The LATCH system is designed to hook the car seat directly into the frame of the car. When installed and tightened properly, the car seat should have very little movement. There are options for 4-point and 5 point harnesses that secure a child. When the baby is in the seat, the buckle should be at the level of his nipples and there should only be enough slack to pull the harness about 1" from the baby's body. Most seats have several height settings for the belt by the shoulders. The setting should always be at or slightly below the baby's shoulder.

what is the youngest/smallest for a booster seat?
I asked about a front facing car seat for the airplane and trip to disney, and someone recomended a booster seat. At only one and a half I thought that would be too small for a booster, am I wrong? It would be nice to have something that easy to carry around but I really thought he had to be older?
Booster seats are NOT approved for airplane use.
The airlines and the FAA do recommend children to have their own seat with a child safety device for security reasons. Many times the seat belts on airplanes are just too big (no matter how much you tighten them) to securely and properly fasten in the frames of little children. Having them in a CRS (Child Restraint System) helps to protect them during turbulence, makes them feel secure, is more comfortable for both parent and child, and gives both of you the opportunity to relax a bit.
In order to be certified for use on an airplane, the car seat has to met the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. Check the labels on the side of your car restraint for a sticker (words will be printed in red) for verification that your seat is safe for airplane use.
Many airlines offer half-price tickets so parents can be guaranteed that their child can travel in a CRS device. You should call your airline to ask for a discount and/or ask what the airline's policy is for using empty seats.
Here's a seat for $40 that is light, easy to travel with and gets great reviews. There are no bells or whistles on it but it can then be used as a second car seat for babysitters, grandparents, etc.

Please Help! We need 2 narrow booster seats to fit with a rear-facing infant seat w/ base. Any suggestions?
We have a 4yr old, a 5 yr old and our expecting our third any day now. We cannot buy another car b/c we are moving overseas and can only take one car. And we can't trade in our car b/c we just got it less than a year ago (we had no idea we were already expecting when we bought it). I've heard of the Sunshine Kids Radian seats and like them, but cannot afford them. There has to be something that will work for less money.
Here is some info:
-We drive a Ford Five Hundred and the backseat is 54in wide
-My 4yr old is 42lbs and my 5 yr old is 53lbs.
-The infant seat and base came with the Cosco Sprint travel system and is a Cosco Designer 22.

*As for seating arrangements put your two older kids on the edges and the baby in the middle. Because the two older ones need to have a lap and shoulder belt.

The seat belt just seems to fit better when the base is still attached...anybody have the same situation? Advice?
I would go with the manufacturers instructions. It is probably safer that way, even if it does not seem right to you.

Graco Junior Maxi Booster Car Seat Fitting Guide
I need a car/ booster seat that sits high enough to deter motion sickness for 3 y/o.?
DS had a Britax marathon which allowed him to sit up higher and look over the front seats so that he didn't get car sick as much. However, we had to give that his younger sibling. So we were given a Graco booster, which is nice except it doesn't allow him to sit up high enough to see over the front of the car and he get gets car sick every time we go anywhere. Does anyone know if the Britax Frontier, or any other booster seats for that matter, sits as high as the marathon? He is 40 lbs, so he could, technically, use another marathon, but I would like to look at booster seats so that he use it until he is at least 8 y/o without being embarrassed by it. (With the marathon in the back as well, he doesn't have room to sit in the middle).

He was riding in a booster seat. A 5-point harness in much, much safer than a booster (which is why race car drivers use them).

As to your original question, I think the seat that would probably sit him up the highest and also last the longest would be the Safeguard Child Seat. The Britax Frontier or Regent are also really good seats but don't sit up quite as high. The Sunshine Kids Radian sits the lowest of all of them.

HARKER HEIGHTS — The City Council decided to give $5,000 to the Harker Heights Knights Court Booster Club to send the high school football team to San Antonio this weekend.
Was the Dad this clueless or did he do it on purpose?
I was in Walmart the other day (same time I saw the lady with the fake baby if you read my last question) and I see this guy getting out of a truck. I then watch him unhook his daughters convertible or booster (not sure which one) seat and put the whole huge thing in the shopping cart. It was the funniest thing I have ever seen. The little girl had to be 3 or 4. I saw them later in the store walking around and the seat took up the whole shopping cart so the dad is holding all of his items to buy. I couldn't help but laugh when I saw it. Do you think that this dad was just that clueless or do you think he did it on purpose?
I should add that I am almost positive that the little girl didn't have anything wrong with her because she was standing up trying to get out of the seat.
LMAO! That's hilarious, I wish I saw stuff like that in my local supermarket!

They are creepy as hell! I saw a documentary on the women who buy them, they're nuts. They spend hundreds of pounds on cots, prams, clothes etc.

Should I buy a second car seat?
I registered for a convertible car seat by evenflo that seems really wonderful. Its rear facing from 5-22 lbs, forward facing till about 65 lbs and then a booster from 65-100. After thinking about it I wondered if I should get a infant car seat too. Regular convertible car seats don't pop out of their bases so you can carry them around like infant car seats, do they? I was thinking that an infant car seat would be good running errands. If I were to need to run to the grocery store or to the bank what other options would I have except to get the baby out of his car seat and hold him or unpacking the stroller. Help? Opinions?
I guess it's up to you. I used the infant seat for the very reasons you listed for a long time. I loved that I could take him out of the car without disturbing him if he was sleeping. He would also sleep in it when we went places, and I could keep him in it in a restaurant (just turn a highchair over and put in on top). If you don't have one, you could always take him out of the carseat and put him into a sling or carrier.
Also, although the convertible car seats say that they are for babies from 5-30 lbs (or whatever), sometimes they don't recline enough for a newborn and are not as comfortable at that age.
