What is the best convertible car seat for a baby that is slim? ?

We have a toyota matrix and in the back seat we have a 5 yr old that sits in a booster seat and we have a 1 yr old that sits in a convertible car seat. Were having our third baby this spring and i was wondering if anyone has any ideas on the best convertible car seat that is slim enough to fit in the center of my other two? both the other seats are graco but brand is not an issue for us. Thanks!

Sunshine Kids Radian65 is the narrowest seat out there. Don't spend extra money on the Radian80 unless you just want the girly print or the infant padding. Its the exact same seat as the 65, just tested to a higher limit. However, lots of seats will work in 3 across, just depends upon which seats and how you arrange them. One caveat: 3 across are MUCH easier without boosters! Consider putting your 5 year old back in a harness not only b/c its safer, but b/c its easier to have a seat permanently installed rather than squeezing hands into tiny spaces every time you get in/out of the car to buckle a booster. "1. don't assume.

A big car seat may fit in a 3 across in a small car. Even in a space where a smaller seat did not fit.

A combination of seats that seems impossible may work if you change what goes where. Or what child uses which seat.

Driver and passenger outboard positions are not necessarily identical.

2. Don't be afraid to try something someone else found impossible.

3. Don't measure. The numbers NEVER add up to enough space, but that doesn't mean squat.

4. You may end up with a car seat brand you said you would never buy. (I may have to buy another d@mn Radian in the near future)

5. Don't attempt a 3 across when you are really hungry/tired/annoyed with the world. You'll end up throwing something expensive down on the driveway in disgust.

6. Do keep your sense of humor when the cop stops to ask you what you are doing in your bathrobe throwing stuff around in the driveway at 2 AM.

7.Remember that new seats are almost always cheaper than new cars. Practice saying this in the mirror before breaking the news to your SO."

Its likely to be easier to have the newborn in a convertible seat, than in a carrier, b/c carriers usually take up more room. Also, most people say put the baby in the middle, this is contrary to what you should do. The LEAST protected child should be in the most protected position, the middle. Well, the most protected child is the one(s) rear facing. The least protected child is the one in a booster or seat belt. So your 5 year old should be in the middle. And if your 1 year old is forward facing already, consider turning him back around. The old 20lbs/1 year rule is just that. OLD. It came about in the 1980's when our seats were only capable of rear facing to 20lbs and we didn't know any better. Now we definitely know better and all current convertible seats rear face to at least 30lbs, but its hard getting people to realize this.
Turning kids forward at 20lbs/1year is an outdated practice that could cost you your child's life!
1)A forward-facing child under 2 years old is 5 times more likely to be killed or seriously injured in a crash than a rear-facing child of the same age.
2)A child's vertabrae do not fully fuse until 3-6 years old, before then, she is at great risk for internal decapitation. The spinal column can stretch up to 2 inches in a crash BUT the spinal cord can only stretch up to 1/4 inch before it snaps and baby is gone.
3)Current research suggests that children under the age of two years are 75 percent less likely to die or be seriously injured when they are riding rear facing.
4)In a recent article from Injury Prevention, it was found that the odds of severe injury to forward facing children age 12-23 months old was 5.32 times higher than a rear facing child. (Car Safety Seats For Children: Rear Facing For Best Protection; Injury Prevention 2007; 13:398-402.)

It works this way: when you get in an accident and run into something, the car stop suddently, but everything and everyone in the car keeps moving in the direction the car was moving when it stopped, in most accidents, this is forward. So in an accident with a child in a forward facing seat, his head, the heaviest part of the body on babies and toddlers, flies forward very forcefully and easily snaps. If that same child is in a rear facing seat, his head tries to fly forward but is supported by the back of the rear facing seat, so there is no stress put on the child's neck and spine.

There are, however, lots of cases where children have been killed and seriously injured where a rear facing seat would have protected them better. And most kids actually prefer to be rear facing b/c they can rest their feet on the vehicle seat back. When they are forward facing, their legs don't receive enough support and will frequently fall asleep.
